New criteria for baby name - Domain name must be available
As if choosing a name wasn't difficult enough, now you have something else to consider
when choosing a name - is the domain already registered for that name.
This is the problem facing a lot of new parents. A small but growing
number of parents are getting domain names for their young kids, long
before they know how to use a keyboard and the practice is no longer
limited to parents in Web design or information technology.
Before Mila Belle Howells left hospitla, she got something she won't
likely use herself for several years: her very own Internet domain name.
Also, Bennett Pankow joined his four older siblings in getting his
own Internet moniker. In fact, before naming his child, Mark Pankow
checked to make sure "BennettPankow.com" hadn't already been claimed.
There is no certainty of the future role of these registered domains.
There's no guarantee that domain names will have as central a role
in online identity. After all, with search engines getting smarter,
Internet users can simply type the name of a person into Google. Bt it is
relatively cheap to buy a domain name about $9/year for a .com name.
People are also registering their baby names in popular online services
e.g. gmail, hotmail and others. The problem is you have to log in to the account every so often to
keep it active.
Although some parents have yet to use the domain names they've bought,
others are sending visitors to baby photos, blogs and other personal
sites. Domain name owners have a variety of options to have their
personal sites hosted.
One concern for the future is easy which a person may be contacted
by people you may not want contacting your child. Imagine you 10-year old child
has their name registered and has a site with some contact information.
Perverts could get this information simply by knowing the childs name.
For that reason, parents might need more lessons on safety measures
such as how to password-protect sites.
